Coop Établi is recognized for its refined wood indoor furniture such as tables, chairs, and stools, modest yet distinguished by meticulous attention to detail.
Building on this spirit, the project explores the elimination of traditional hardware, with the aim of simplifying the relationship between user and object. By minimizing the use of screws, nails, and invasive joinery, the furniture becomes easier to assemble, repair, and transport. The result is an object that encourages more direct and intuitive interaction, extending the user’s engagement beyond simple functionality.
The research led to the development of a visible interlocking system, in which the structural logic itself becomes part of the design language. This system is complemented by a circular motif repeated throughout the piece, a familiar and welcoming shape that conveys warmth, conviviality, and openness.
Environmental considerations also guided the design process. Instead of relying on imported materials, the table is made of locally sourced Canadian maple, reducing its carbon footprint. To further align with the principle of minimizing invasive hardware, the entire structure is held together by a single machined steel ring, both functional and symbolic: it unifies the object while highlighting its structural honesty.
This piece is therefore more than a table. It is an exploration of simplicity, sustainability, and user-centered interaction within the tradition of Coop Établi’s design philosophy.
